The study

Australian scientists from the University of Sydney found that yoga can ease pain but also cause pain and injuries. Scientists have found that yoga causes musculoskeletal pain-mostly in the hands-in more than ten percent of participants. Yoga has also worsened existing injuries in twenty-one percent of people.

“Yoga may be much more dangerous than most people think, says Professor Evangelos Pappas. “Our study shows that the frequency of pain caused by yoga practice is more than ten percent per year, compared to sport injuries”.

During the tests, researchers estimated three hundred fifty people who attended yoga classes at two studios in New York.

The participants were mainly forty-five years old women. Participants filled out a questionnaire when recruiting in groups and a year after yoga classes.

According to information received, thirteen percent of participants reported pain in the shoulder, elbow, wrist or arm. Experts believe that this is because their upper limbs cannot properly support a big weight.

However, the good news is that almost seventy-four percent of participants reported a decrease in lower back and neck pain.
